MILES CITY FLOOD - 1944

 

It was "bombs away" - we're talking the genuine articles - when the ice-jammed Yellowstone River flooded Miles City, Montana, in 1944. The governor of the state, Sam Ford, requested military assistance. An Army Air Corps B-17 "Flying Fortress" dropped 250-pound bombs on the river to shatter the jam.
