DURANGO - 1974

On Aug. 24, 1974, Durango firefighter Nick Parks III and police Corporal Gale Emerson died when wall collapsed at a raging fire on Durango's Main Avenue.

"The whole thing came down without warning," said an official quoted by the Associated Press.

Six buildings were destroyed; a seventh was damaged.
