In 1988, the largest wildfire in the recorded history of Yellowstone National Park scorched 1 million acres in Wyoming and Montana.
Starting as individual fires, the flames - fueled by winds and drought - merged into a conflagration that burned for weeks.
On Sept. 8, the entire park was closed to all but fire crews for the first time.
